If your fridge is full of fruit and vegetables, you will eat lots of fruit and vegetables. If your fridge is full of chocolate, you will eat… you get the idea.

So keep all the gunnels in your fridge (the largest you can afford and fit into your kitchen) stuffed with vegetables and fruit.

Particular favourites of mine are cherry tomatoes, carrots, aubergine, onions, spring onions, pointy cabbage, salad leaves, radicchio, red peppers, courgettes, pumpkin and cauliflower. I always have a bunch of parsley and chilli to hand and some fresh ginger in the freezer. If I have run out of lemons, I consider calling emergency services.

Fruit-wise, pomegranates are top of my list for adding to all manner of salads, along with lemons (obviously), limes, oranges, apples, mangoes, raspberries, and peaches and nectarines.

I also try and make sure I always have salads and cooked pulses ready in the fridge, so that when I am rushed off my feet I don’t head for the doughnuts, or make a quick sandwich … and then another one.

In the corners not taken over with vegetable matter, I make sure there is some lean chicken or fish, and lots of eggs. You can turn eggs into something filling and delicious in less time than it takes to order a takeaway.
